The John Froelich tractor, built in 1892, is considered the first successful gasoline-powered tractor, capable of moving forward and backward. While the term "tractor" wasn't in use then, the machine was the predecessor to modern tractors, replacing bulky and dangerous steam engines with a more maneuverable and safer gasoline-powered engine, according to the froelich tractor museum.
